John P. Mackintosh is widely recognised as one of the most influential political figures of his generation. A highly respected academic, gifted orator and prolific writer, he served from 1966 to 1978 as Labour MP for Berwick and East Lothian and was Professor of Politics at the University of Edinburgh.
The John P. Mackintosh Memorial Debate is being organised jointly by the University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Parliament to mark the 40th Anniversary of the death of John P. Mackintosh. This wide ranging discussion, led by a panel of leading figures from political and academic life, will consider Mackintosh’s legacy and will examine some of the contemporary issues and challenges facing democracy today.
The event will be chaired by the Rt Hon Ken Macintosh MSP, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament and will be followed by a reception in the Garden Lobby of the Scottish Parliament which will be addressed by Professor Peter Mathieson, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh and Iain Gray MSP for East Lothian.

7.30 p.m. - 8.30 p.m. Reception (Wine and Canapes will be served in the Garden Lobby of The Scottish Parliament to which you are also invited).
Those attending will have an opportunity to view an exhibiton on the life of John P. Mackintosh. During the reception, Professor Peter Mathieson, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University and Iain Gray MSP will address the audience.

If you register for more than one ticket, please register the name of the person that will use that ticket. Failure to do so may result in being refused entry to The Scottish Parliament.
Access/Security at The Scottish Parliament :
Please arrive at The Scottish Parliament's Pubic Entrance on Horse Wynd.
Security Procedures will be in place for everyone entering the building, which include an airport style-check.
We would advise you to bring photographic I.D with you on the night.
You must bring your ticket (printed or electronic) with you to the event.
