The Canadian Arctic is a developing region within a G-8 nation that faces issues related to developing countries despite the fact that it is inside one of the richest nations in the world – Canada. The struggle for development among Inuit is therefore more complex. Canadian Inuit face classic development issues such as those related to human health, economic development, and basic infrastructure. Furthermore the Arctic region is under great stress right now as a result of global issues such as Climate Change.

The Centre of Canadian Studies is delighted to welcome Mary Simon to the University and to mark her visit to Edinburgh by co-hosting this public lecture with National Museums Scotland. Scholars at the Centre of Canadian Studies are researching the development of new forms of governance in the Canadian Arctic and value the opportunity to hear Mary Simon give first hand insights into the current challenges for developing regions.
