John is working with a team of researchers at WZB, led by Senior Researcher Miriam Hartlapp, on Position Formation in the European Commission. On 7-8 February 2011, WZB provided support to a workshop held at Free University Berlin at which John and other participants in the 'European Commission of the 21st Century' project presented drafts of chapters to appear in the volume of the same name, to be published by Oxford University Press in 2012 (see http://www.pol.ed.ac.uk/eu_consent/commission_survey). The workshop featured a public lecture - 'jour fixe' in German academic parlance - co-presented by Andy Thompson of Edinburgh PIR.
While in Berlin, John and Elizabeth Bomberg of Edinburgh PIR made a pilgrimage to Staendige Vertretung, a bar/restaurant famous in German political circles for its fascinating collection of memorabilia from the Federal Republic's political history.
