Sutton Summer School 2015

Sutton Summer School pupils study Politics at Edinburgh, become election experts

PIR staff and students took part in a hugely enjoyable Sutton Summer School on campus.  In partnership with the Sutton Trust, the University of Edinburgh holds a week long summer school for over 100 high achieving senior pupils from state schools or backgrounds with low progression rates to higher education.

The Politics team this year was coordinated by Dr Elizabeth Bomberg and also involved contributions from Prof Charlie Jeffery, Dr Alan Convery, Dr Carmen Gebhard and PIR alumni Shona Buchanan and Joe Gayeski.  The students tackled subjects such as power, parliament, constitutional change and international security.  Ten particularly brave students also took part in the Politics Video Project exploring the 2015 UK General Election.

Elizabeth worked with the very talented Year 3 IR student Tara Biglari to oversee the video project which included student’s own analysis and  ‘expert interviews’ on key issues and actors in the election (party leaders, youth vote, media, gender, immigration and nationalism). The student video was shown to the wider Sutton school in one of its closing sessions.   We hope the bright pupils taking part decide to apply next year to study PIR at Edinburgh. Fingers crossed that we see them as Freshers in 2016.   Well done all!
