Sam Spiegel Receives 2016 Chancellor’s Rising Star Award
Dr. Samuel Spiegel, Lecturer in International Development, is the recipient of this year’s Chancellor’s Rising Star Award for Research.
Dr. Spiegel received the award in recognition of his exceptional work in the field of mineral extraction and international development and for his innovative contribution in developing a growing research environment in the Centre of African Studies and in the School of Social and Political Science.
Established in 2003, the Chancellor’s Awards recognise innovation, relevance, creativity, personal dedication and impact within both teaching and research. The Rising Star Award honours early-career colleagues who demonstrate great potential.
Sam was commended on the resonance and impact of his work in development studies, including his high quality publications, demonstrable research impact and excellent track record in research funding, as well as his contributions to mentoring and research leadership.
The Rising Star Award 2016 was conferred by the University Chancellor, HRH The Princess Royal, at a gala dinner held at the Palace of Holyrood House on Tuesday 13 September. Dr. Barbara Bompani, Director of the Centre of African Studies, and Professor Fiona Mackay, Dean and Head of the School of Social and Political Science, both accompanied Dr. Spiegel.
