In Memory of Eberhard 'Paddy' Bort (1954 - 2017)
It is with great sadness and regret that the School notes the passing of our colleague Eberhard (Paddy) Bort.
Before coming to Edinburgh in 1995, Paddy worked at Tübingen University in British and Irish Studies with Professor Christopher Harvie, and taught in German Studies at Trinity College Dublin, and at the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington, USA.
His teaching at the University of Edinburgh included Scottish Society and Culture, Contemporary Irish Politics, The Politics of Borders, and British Studies. He was also the long time Book Reviews Editor of Scottish Affairs.
Since 1999, Paddy was the leading light of the School’s Parliamentary Programme, under whose aegis, over many years, hundreds of students participated in a unique collaboration between the School’s Institute of Governance and the Scottish Parliament.
Paddy was well known and rightly renowned within and beyond the School, and was deeply involved in the cultural and civic life of Edinburgh. We will be paying tribute to Paddy’s many talents and contributions in time.
The School extends its condolences and deepest sympathies to Paddy’s family, friends, and colleagues.
