Professor Frank Bechhofer (1935-2018)
We have received very sad news of the death of Professor Frank Bechhofer, after a brief period of illness.
Professor Bechhofer worked for many years within and across parts of the School of Social Political Science (SPS), and was well known to many people around the School.
He started his career as a research officer in the Department of Applied Economics at Cambridge University and in 1965 came to Edinburgh as a lecturer in the Department of Sociology. He founded the Research Centre for Social Sciences in 1984 and was its director until he took early retirement in 1997, to concentrate on his research.
Since then, as an emeritus professor and mainly in collaboration with Professor David McCrone, Professor Bechhofer continued research focusing around studies of nationalism, especially national identity in Scotland and England in the context of constitutional change.
Everyone at SPS extends their condolences to Professor Bechhofer’s family, friends and colleagues.
Professor McCrone has written this tribute to his long-time collaborator.
