2010 - This project website has now been archived.

The onging work of the project is now part of wider inititaives in the School of Social and Political Science and more details on graduate school research training courses can be found onf the Graduate School website.

project background

The Graduate School of Social and Political Studies currently provides a suite of training courses for research students across the social sciences, tailored to meet the requirements set out in the 2001 ESRC Research Training Guidelines These courses are open to students from all Colleges in the University and provide the basis for most (but not all) of the University’s successful applications for ESRC recognition.

Although the SPS courses have been extremely successful in terms of ESRC recognition the courses have to address the needs of students with very different levels of prior knowledge, different research interests and diverse disciplinary backgrounds. A key rationale behind the project is the development of more flexible provision to meet the needs of different kinds of students.

project objectives

This e-learning project is developing a set of modular web-based units to replace and enhance the existing course provision, enabling flexible, relevant research training. The project proposes to develop:

A new 2 part web-based module Core Quantitative Data Analysis

A new web-based module in Qualitative Data Analysis

A new induction portal 'Formal Foundations in Research Methods'
