PhD title

Kin-minority parties in a (dis)integrating Europe:
Cross-border cooperation and irredentism in the European Union

My PhD project investigates how Western European kin-minority parties perceive European integration. Kin-minority parties are defined (1) by their desire to restructure the territorial power relations within the state in which the respective minority resides, and (2) by their aim to uphold political and/or cultural ties with their neighbouring kin-state. Given kin-minority parties’ commitment to ethnically motivated cross-border cooperation, this dissertation also explores how the European Union modifies the opportunities for cross-border collaboration, and how kin-minority parties react to these changes. These research questions are addressed by an in-depth analysis of kin-minority parties’ positions in Northern Ireland and South Tyrol in the period between 1990 (the end of the “permissive consensus”) and the aftermath of the Brexit referendum and Italy’s failed 2016 constitutional reform.
