Social Learning, Social Shaping and the Copyright Hub: a case study of Emergent IP Infrastructure in the Creative Economy
Research Background and Interests
Hung Nguyen was originally trained as a Java Programmer and a practitioner in Business Information Systems. During his time at the University of Brighton, Nguyen was attracted by socio-technical approaches to studying information systems and research on disastrous events, ranging from the sinking of the RMS Titanic to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima nuclear disaster. In his final year dissertation, Nguyen chose to explore the relationship between social media and the transformation of power relations in contemporary society via studying a series of incidents erupted in England and the Arabian world in late 2011.
In September 2012, Nguyen moved to Edinburgh and started his training as a researcher in Science and Technology Studies (STS) – a field whose existence was only revealed to him by then. Under the guidance of Dr. Gian Marco Campagnolo, Nguyen found a new research interest in Digital Copyright Exchange (DCE) and the wider impacts of digital technologies on society through two conceptual lenses: disintermediation and interoperability. After graduation, Nguyen is funded by the University of Edinburgh and the National University of Singapore to pursue his doctoral research on the Copyright Hub and the emergence of a new Intellectual Property (IP) Infrastructure in the Creative Economy.
