SSPS Research Students' Orientation Day
Thursday 14 September 2017 | 10:00 - 16:00 | Foyer and Seminar Rooms 1+2, Chrystal Macmillan Building
Run jointly by the Graduate School of Social and Political Science and the Institute for Academic Development, this core session gives an introduction to Postgraduate Research within the University of Edinburgh, and an opportunity to meet your fellow incoming research students, key staff within the school, and current PhD students in their second and third years. The content will cover: welcome and contexts, introduction to computing in SPS, expectations and challenges, working with supervisors, and planning ahead - the 1st three months.Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The Programme Welcome Meetings provide an opportunity to meet with your Postgraduate Advisor, fellow students on your programme, and provide you with essential information and advice on your programme and research training courses, both core and optional. As there is a large number of research programmes within the school, the schedule of meetings is available separately, here.

Introduction to Library Resources

Run by the School of Social and Political Science Librarian, the session will cover the following topics:

- Types of library resources available
- Online research resources

Introduction to the Data Library
Wednesday 14 September 2016 | 15:00-16:00 | Seminar Rooms 1+2, Chrystal Macmillan Building
This session presented by University Data Library staff will cover how to find quantitative and qualitative data sources to help you with your research project, including cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys, government statistical and census data, economic time series and financial databases and sources for mapping data. After a brief introduction to the Data Library and its services for University staff and students, it will cover data sources from national resources including the UK Data Service, EDINA, government and the third sector.

University of Edinburgh Welcome Ceremony, hosted by the central University
Monday 11 September 2017 | doors open at 13:30, event begins at 14:15 | McEwan Hall
This traditional University ceremonial event welcomes new students to the University community. The Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea, will officially welcome you to the University. You will also get the opportunity to hear from a number of student Office Bearers, including the Students' Association and Sports Union Presidents, and Senior members of University staff. At the conclusion of the ceremony, there will a tea/coffee reception in the Foyer of the Festival Theatre. We encourage you to stay and meet fellow new students and University staff.
Postgraduate Research Students Welcome, hosted by the central University
Tuesday 12 September 2017 | 13:00-15:00 | McEwan Hall
This is the University's formal Welcome for all new Postgraduate Research students. This event includes a formal welcome from the University, current postgraduate students talking about their experience and top tips and an introduction to various student support services who are available to assist you throughout your time at the University.
After the formal welcome talks conclude you will have the opportunity to meet fellow new students and talk to the Student Services in detail about your individual questions at our Services Fair! During the Services Fair we will provide you with complimentary tea, coffee and juice.
