18th to 21st September 2007 Outline Timetable

Tuesday 18th September – Core Session

Liddell Pavilion at the University Sports Fields (Peffermill)

10.30 - Registration, tea and coffee

10.45 - Network Bingo (Jon Turner, Director of Transkills Programme, University of Edinburgh)

11.00 - Welcome and introduction to the week (Jan Webb, Director of the Graduate School)

11.10 - Expectations of postgraduate research (small groups, with current postgrads)

11.45 - Rough Guide to Life as a Postgraduate Researcher – The Insider’s View

12.00 - “Everything you wanted to know about doing postgraduate research but were too afraid to ask” (small groups, with current postgrads)

13.00 - Lunch (bar area)

From lunch time onwards there will be sign-up sheets in the hallway for participants to sign up for a range of optional sessions including computing and SPSS orientation.

13.45 - Expectations of postgraduate research students and orientation to postgraduate study – round up (Jan Webb)

14.00 - Contexts – the Graduate School, where it fits in to the School and the College; roles and responsibilities, postgraduate research training (Jan Webb)

14.45 - Tea break

15.15 - Research Training Courses Fair

16.45 - Close

Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th September

Optional Sessions including computing, SPSS, talking about your research, writing, library, accessing literature and data and so on.

Various locations in the central area/George Square

Friday 21st September 10.45 -15.00 – Core Session (all to attend)

Liddell Pavilion at the University Sports Fields (Peffermill)

Evening, 19.30 until late

The week will end with a party (including a Celidh with Shingis McKingis) at the Minto Hotel (16-18 Minto Street, Edinburgh, EH9 1RQ).
