Section: PhD Programmes

Introduction

This degree is based on a minimum of three years' full-time study and independent research. In the first year, students combine a programme of research training with preliminary work on their thesis topic. The research training follows the requirements of the MSc by Research. Students may initially register for this degree, and transfer to PhD status at the end of their first year. Students have two supervisors; at least one comes from the Subject or Centre in which the student is based. At the end of their study, the student submits a thesis of at least 80,000 words, based on original research, which is examined by two specially appointed examiners.

The PhD can be taken on a part-time basis with a minimum of six years' study. Part-time students have access to the same facilities as full-time students.
