Section: Pre-Arrival
Welcome to the Pre-Arrival page! This page is designed for our new students who will be coming to study at the Graduate School of Social and Political Science in September 2011. Here you will find information on course choices, induction, and links to information on other relevant issues for new students, including accommodation, registration and immigration and visas.
We look forward to welcoming you to Edinburgh in September.
In addition to the information about your degree and course choices on the programme website (accessible from the Graduate School homepage), each degree also has its own Programme Handbook. This describes the programme in more detail, and gives information on the programme aims and outcomes, and on the core and optional courses. Please note that the handbooks are updated each year and that not all course options are offered every year.
Handbooks for 2010-11 are provided for your information only; they may be subject to change in 2011-12. Handbooks for 2011-12 will be made available shortly.
For most degrees, you must choose your optional courses (for both semesters) by the end of week 1 of semester 1 (Friday 23rd September 2011). Most students choose their courses after they have had their meeting with their Programme Director during Induction Week. Please fill in a course choice form (available from the Graduate School Office Reception) and submit to the Graduate School Office by the end of week 1.
In 2011-12, for the first time, we are doing early course enrollment for students on the following degrees:
Students taking these degrees will be emailed in early August with information on their optional courses and how to choose them.
The Programme Handbooks list the core and optional courses for each degree. You can also find the list of courses for each degree programme, with clickable links through to course information, at http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/
Further information on SSPS courses is available on our new courses webpage.
The course timetable will be available in early August, at http://www.sps.ed.ac.uk/gradschool/timetable/
Last year's timetable, for 2010-11, is currently available. This will provide you with an idea of our standard timetable - however, please note that the timetable is subject to change for 2011-12, and you should not make any choices or plans based around last year's timetable.
Induction week runs from Monday 12th - Friday 16th September 2011, the week before teaching starts. It includes a wide array of events organised by the Graduate School of Social and Political Science, the College of Humanities and Social Science, and the University - including welcome sessions, information on student services, introduction to the Graduate School, campus tours, computing clinics, study sessions, information for international students, social events, opportunities to meet with your fellow students and with your Programme Director or Postgraduate Advisor, and at the end of the week, a Scottish ceilidh. All SSPS students are strongly encouraged to attend. For more information, please see the draft timetables for Induction Week 2011.
During Induction Week, you will also need to matriculate, and go to the Graduate School Office to have your attendance confirmed. You will also be able to sign up for your optional courses.
As part of your registration, you must come to the Graduate School Office Reception, with your student card, to have your attendance confirmed.
Semester one teaching starts on 19th September. Semester dates for the year are available here.
The University has created a helpful Guide for New Students, which includes information for all new students and provides guidance on a range of necessary actions such as:
Please note these matters are dealt with by other parts of the University, not the Graduate School of Social and Political Science. For further information, or queries on these matters, please follow the correct links at the University's Guide for New Students.
