Our Masters by Research in Social and Political Science offers a structured programme of research training over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time) to equip students with the skills required to undertake doctoral level research in social and political science.

Taught courses provide core research training around data collection, qualitative and quantitative data analysis and research design, or advanced methods training depending on individual background or research interests.   Students are also encouraged to participate in professional skills workshops offered by our Student Development Office. A 120-credit research dissertation forms a key part of the degree.

The Masters by Research differs from our taught Master’s degrees which typically have more focus on subject-relevant substantive topics rather than acquiring the skills to undertake advanced research. Usually the Masters by Research functions as a training year followed by further PhD study, but it can also be taken as a standalone degree.

As part of the application process applicants are asked to submit a short (max. 3 pages) proposal outlining a potential research topic.
