A message from the Postgraduate Advisor

Welcome to the web pages for the Postgraduate Research Degrees in Social Policy at the Graduate School of Social and Political Science. Here you will find key information about our well established research programme hosted within the top Social Policy unit in Scotland at one of the World's top universities

The programme caters for a diverse range of students including: those with an background in research and/or social and political studies; students from other backgrounds seeking to convert in order to access positions in the public, private and voluntary sectors; part-time students in employment in a range of public and voluntary bodies; and international students seeking a comparative academic perspective on policy issues.

Whether you are looking to pursue a career in social policy or are interested in undertaking doctoral research in the social sciences, our pages will tell you more about our research degrees, the kind of opportunities they can lead to and what previous students have thought. If, after looking through these, you still have questions, please e-mail me I can answer your questions and add them to our FAQ.

We strongly advise students to submit their applications before mid-June, especially where they require an unconditional offer of study in order to secure a student visa. Complete applications may be considered after this stage, but the School can not guarantee that such applications will receive a decision in time for the start of studies in September 2013. We would invite students applying after June to contact the programme director before applying.

For general queries (e.g. fees, qualifications) and application queries contact the Graduate School.

Social Policy in Edinburgh

We warmly invite candidates with a good background in any of the social sciences and a strong interest in social and/or public policy to apply for MSc by Research and PhD degrees in Social Policy. Social Policy has been taught in Edinburgh since 1918 and is well established within the School of Social and Political Science. Edinburgh is the leading centre for social policy research in Scotland and one of the leading centres of postgraduate education and training in social policy in the UK.

We have a vibrant, welcoming and cosmopolitan community of over 30 MSc by Research and PhD students. Supervision is provided by social policy members of staff and, where appropriate, joint supervision with other subject areas (e.g. Politics, Sociology, and Law) and research centres (e.g. the Centre for Research in Families and Relationships). All our postgraduate students are encouraged to take an active role and a cornerstone of our thriving research environment is the opportunity for discussion and debate. To support this ethos we run a wide ranging programme of seminars and events, as well as weekly coffee breaks with staff and students.

Social Policy staff members provide supervision to students on a wide range of research topics. An overarching theme of our work is comparative social policy. Within this, we have particular specialities in: work, economy and welfare; state, governance and welfare; childhood and family studies; and socio-legal studies. Active research groups have been established to reflect these areas of specialist expertise. More detailed information about staff members' research interests may be found in the social policy staff page, while information about current and recent postgraduate research can be found at the research student profiles page
