Douglas McLaren, MSc in Policy Studies 2006-07

What were you doing before you applied to the MSc in Policy Studies?

I was working in consultancy as a Chartered Engineer.

Why did you apply to the programme?

I hoped to get a broad grounding in government policy work that would allow me to change my career direction.  After investigating courses across UK universities, I reckoned that the content of Edinburgh's Policy Studies course coupled with the university's reputation was the best choice.

What are your best memories from your time studying here?

The best memories were of meeting interesting, knowledgeable and fun people, both staff and fellow students.

What are you doing now?  Did the degree help you to get where you are?

I'm now on the UK Government's Fast Stream programme, working at the Ministry of Justice.  Undoubtedly the Policy Studies degree played a major part in getting this post.

What's it like being a student in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is a great place to live and, having also worked there, I'd say student life is the best way to experience it.
