Performing Politics: representation and deliberation in the public sphere
I am currently working towards an interdisciplinary PhD that applies the rich and varied field of performance theory to the political sphere. I argue that the idea of politics as 'showbiz for ugly people' is more than a turn of phrase. Rather, performance and media theories can be powerful tools to evaluate and interpret the political sphere. I explore 4 empirical case studies: the Blair/Brown handover 2007, the SNP election campaign 2007, the Faslane 365 anti-nuclear protests in 2006 and the 7/7 London terrorist attacks in 2007.
My wider research interests include: the links between culture, media and politics, image management and use of PR in politics, campaign strategies, political marketing, terrorism as communication, and the role of performance in gendered politics.
