These online professional development opportunities are great for students studying away, distance learners or those just struggling to attend sessions in person. With the ability to be wrapped around your own personal schedule and interests you can tailor your development needs. 

University of Edinburgh Digital Skills Framework


The University of Edinburgh Digital Skills Framework provides access to over 500 digital resources and training courses to develop your digital skills, offering a variety of learning methods gathered from over 30 providers. It includes : 

·         A self-assessment questionnaire to evaluate your current digital skill levels.

·         Role profiles to help you think about the digital skills you need for your role.

·         A resource finder to help you find ways to develop your skills.

The resources are either provided by the University or, are open and freely available. You can also filter resources according to your role, the type of skills you want to develop, and level of difficulty.

23 Things - Digital Skills 

The University of Edinburgh’s 23 Things for Digital Knowledge is an award-winning (LILAC Credo Digital Literacy Award 2017), a self-directed course, run by Information Services Group.

There is flexibility to do the parts you are interested in, do them all or only some 'Thing's.

Students completing 23Things for skills training are supported and moderated by Charlie Farley and will include Google Hangouts, Webinars and Group Work if students want to engage with the group as well as online activity.

Student Employment Skills playlists - Lynda.Com

Along with the Careers Service, the Learning and teaching team have designed 10 playlists to facilitate your learning of key skills important to your career through Lynda.com.

On Lynda.com you can learn anywhere you have internet access at any time around your own schedule. Each playlist can be paused and restarted at any time of your choosing. Perfect for students with many demands on their time, distance learners or those away from the University. Once you have completed the training you can download a certificate of completion.
 

Skill, Duration and Description

Creativity, 2 Hours 5 Minutes

Do you ever think "I'm just not that creative"? You're not alone. Do you struggle to think about problems in new ways and devise unexpected solutions? The good news is that creativity can be developed. Use these videos to discover simple tips to boost your creative output & learn how to think about the world in a different way. Note: It is essential you judge the relevance of any Lynda.com content to your own context. If these differ, consider if and how you can appropriately adapt and apply what you learn.

Presentation Skills, 2 Hours 22 Minutes

'Presentation Fundamentals' takes you through the basics of creating and delivering confident presentations. Designing a presentation focuses on how to design slides that catch the eye and get across your key points. 'Overcoming Your Fear of Public Speaking' might be of help to those who find the very idea of presenting challenging. 'How to Present and Stay on Point' provides a brief overview of how to focus on your main points and supplements the main course on Presentation fundamentals.

Time Managment, 2 Hours 52 minutes

Managing your time effectively is not only important at university, but is essential to many aspects of your professional and personal life. In these courses, experts discuss methods of managing your time effectively and ensuring that you don't waste it and miss important deadlines.

Assertiveness, 59 Minutes

Do you want to communicate your feelings and thoughts more clearly? Being assertive means respecting your own and others’ needs, and communicating this with respect. But how? The 'Communicating Assertively' video gives quick hints and tips, and for a more in-depth look, try the 'Learning to be Assertive course'.

Teamwork, 2 Hours 4 Minutes

Learn the qualities of effective teams and the role you, as a member, play in creating an effective team. As well as knowing your own strengths and weaknesses, these videos emphasise the importance of delivering on expectations, listening to others, communicating clearly, playing more than one role, and being supportive.

Leadership, 2 Hours 39 Minutes

Do you want to build leadership traits to help you inspire your team and successfully manage change and conflict? In these videos, leadership consultants discuss communication, body language and leadership insights to help you assess your strengths and become a more successful leader during your time at University and beyond.

Critical Thinking, 1 Hour 10 Minutes

Critical thinking is the ability to think reflectively and independently in order to make thoughtful decisions. By focusing on root issues, critical thinking helps avoid future issues that can result from your actions. In this course, leadership experts outline techniques to help you develop your critical thinking skills.

Decision Making, 20 Minutes

Effective decision making is a skill that sets you apart personally and professionally. In these videos, experts show you simple steps to making better decisions. This will enable you to evaluate if you have enough time, sufficient information, the right people involved, and other key factors necessary to make strong choices.

Written Communication, 4 Hours 39 Minutes

These videos cover topics related to improving your writing skills, ranging from choosing your writing style to match your audience and writing in plain, easily readable English to being able to edit and proofread long essays and reports to ensure that the information is communicated in a straightforward way.

Entrepreneurship, 3 Hours 3 Minutes
