MSc in African Studies
A message from the Programme Director
Welcome to the web pages for the MSc in African Studies. This degree is for all students who have a strong interest in the African continent and would like to learn more. On-course students are equipped with Africa-related expertise from core disciplines with the School of Social and Political Science, such as anthropology, politics, and history.
The University of Edinburgh, and the Centre of African Studies which delivers the programme, constitutes one of the world's leading centres of Africa-focused knowledge and research. The MSc draws on expertise from across the School of Social and Political Science, and elsewhere, to deliver relevant, cutting edge training on Africa. Our staff edit three major journals focusing on African politics, society, and culture: African Affairs, The Journal of Modern African Studies, and the Journal of Southern African Studies; in addition, we have recently launched our own peer-reviewed journal, Critical African Studies.
One of the strengths of the programme is its diversity. The student body is very international, from a wide range of backgrounds, and our staff draw not only from the social sciences, but also from divinity, the natural sciences and history, to provide a broad and deep grounding in Africa's history and its contemporary issues.
Please explore this site and these links, where you can find out more about the programme's structure and courses, current and past students, and available scholarships. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Best regards
