Hi,
Welcome to Multi-level and Regional Politics at the University of Edinburgh. You will find on these pages information about our exciting new Masters degree, including details of the programme, as well as the courses on offer.
This cutting edge degree is the first of its kind in Europe and reflects our unrivalled expertise in the field of territorial politics and multi-level government. The University has the largest concentration of UK scholars working in the field. More than 20 faculty members within the School of Social and Political Science and the Law School conduct research on the political, sociological and legal implications of regionalism, nationalism and multi-level government. Our empirical focus spans advanced democratic multi-national or federal states (UK, Germany, Canada, Spain, Italy, Belgium) as well as multi-ethnic states such as Russia and South Africa. Our expertise on multi-level governance in the EU is arguably second to none.
The MSc in Multi-level and Regional Politics brings this expertise to both a taught MSc designed to open up careers in policy-making, policy analysis, consultancy or research, and a research-track MSc intended as a gateway to PhD research.
Given how important this field is to our research, there are plenty of opportunities for students to attend seminars and engage in lively discussions and debates on multi-level and regional politics. All Faculty involved in the programme are part of the Institute of Governance, one of the leading centres for the study of devolution and national identity in Europe. The university also hosts the Europa Institute, one of the most active and longest-established centres for the advanced study of European integration. These research institutes frequently host seminars involving speakers from the political world as well as leading academic scholars from across Europe and North America.
Faculty members also coordinate leading national and international networks of scholars working on multi-level and regional politics, including the European Consortium of Political Research Standing Group on Federalism and Regionalism and the UK Political Studies Association Specialist Group on Territorial Politics. An Edinburgh team headed by Professor Charlie Jeffery edits the leading European journal in the field, Regional & Federal Studies.
All of these activities take place in one of Europe's leading universities and in a city which is both a World Heritage site, a fantastic place to live, and a city deeply engaged in the politics of devolution, national identity and multi-level systems.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any further queries.
All the best,
Nicola
