As a student on our programme you will have the opportunity to draw together options from one of the UK’s largest groupings of high quality social science, taking advantage of all the resources one of the world's top universities has to offer. Here you will be able to build a degree that suits your regional, disciplinary and professional interests with access to top scholars. This masters programme is open to students and professionals looking to develop a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics of international development and how they play out in a global context.
The University of Edinburgh has an international reputation in all aspects of the study of science and technology in society. With the founding of the Science Studies Unit in 1964, it is here that pioneering work was done to develop the 'Edinburgh School', or Strong Programme in the sociology of scientific knowledge. Likewise, Edinburgh has been the home for ground-breaking studies of the shaping of technology by cultural, economic, political and organisational factors. Scholars such as Steven Shapin, Donald Mackenzie, Andrew Pickering, John Law and David Bloor have all worked or earned their degrees here. Likewise Edinburgh has trained no less than three African presidents, including Julius Nyerere. Our alumni also include Huang Kuan, the first Chinese student to study in the West.
On the following pages listed to the right you can find more information about the aims of the programme, the courses we offer and about the scholarships available for our MSc. There is also a list of what we've been reading lately.
