Interrogating Need: Exploring the Role of Need in Distributive Justice Theory

Christina Dineen, PhD Candidate

I am interested distributive justice and the various norms that we associate with fair distribution. In particular, my research looks at whether need is a relevant or legitimate distributive principle, and how the fact that someone is in need might present a normative claim to another person. What makes a need morally important? How can we come to owe someone a response to their need, as a matter of justice? How are nearby concepts such as rights, capabilities, and interests related to needs - can they do the same work?
