Biographical statement

Thierry Balzacq was a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh from July 2012 till February 2013, and Tocqueville Professor of International Relations at the University of Namur in Belgium (on leave). A former Research Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels, he has held visiting positions at Harvard University, University of Wales, Aberystwyth (Marie Curie), Sciences Po Paris, Ecole Nationale d’Administration (ENA), and University of Louvain.

Thierry’s research interests are in the fields of critical approaches to security; securitization theory; IR theory; Actor-Network Theory; trust and the institutional design of regional security in particular the EU; technology and security; disciplinary politics and the institutionalization of IR in French speaking countries; research design and qualitative methods.

Thierry has published 45+ pieces including books, book chapters and articles. His articles have appeared in journals such as Journal of Common Market Studies, Review of International Studies, Security Dialogue, Cooperation and Conflict; Les Champs de Mars, European Journal of International Relations, Annuaire français des relations internationales, Cultures & Conflits.
