Q-Step Data Fringe Event 2019

Event for S5/S6 pupils

Go Figure! Understanding Social Inequality Through Digital Data

About the Event

Q-Step Centre at the University of Edinburgh is inviting S5/S6 pupils to attend our exciting Data Fringe event on using digital data to understand the determinants and consequences of social and georgraphical inequality. This event is open to all pupils but would be particularly useful for those studying higher or advanced higher maths, statistics, geography, modern studies and other social subjects. Teachers and parents are more than welcome to attend the workshop, but we're happy for pupils aged 16 or over to come on their own.

The event will be held on Wednesday 13 March 2019, 16:00-18:00 at the University of Edinburgh (Chrystal Macmillan Building, 15a George Square, EH8 9LD, Computer Lab B.03).

This evening of interactive hands-on Excel lab session is linked to the Curriculum for Excellence and is designed to give pupils an insight into how we use maths and stats in social and political science.

Participants will gain:

  • Skills and confidence in data analysis in Excel;
  • A more in depth understanding of inequalities in the UK and globaly;
  • An understanding of the range of ways in which digital data can help us answer social and political questions, especially in relation to inequality;
  • Hands-on experience of how the application of maths and stats to social situations is fun, useful and interesting;
  • The opportunity to chat with our current undergraduate students and find out how life at university is like.
  • Awareness of the career opportunities open for graduates who combine knowledge of maths and Social and/or Political Science
