Brexit will be hugely disruptive for UK food and agricultural policies, including food safety policy.  No one knows how the upheaval will conclude; not even UK ministers.  This presentation will draw on the experience of the last major watershed in UK food safety policy, namely the BSE crisis, and illustrate the potential impacts of Brexit by drawing on competing models of how scientific and political considerations contribute to food safety policy-making. A range of competing scenarios will be outlined, and the factors influencing the eventual outcome will be explored.  Differences in the approaches of the UK government and the Scottish government will be highlighted.
