The history of food packaging entails examination of a goodly collection of other histories - of labelling, innovations in materials science, and many more. Today’s seminar considers the link between food packaging and food shopping. In particular it attends to key developments in the latter of the early and mid-twentieth century, notably self-service and the rise of the supermarket and the consequent implications for social relationships between retailer and customer. Part of a book entitled The Secret Life of Food Packaging for Bloomsbury, this amply illustrated talk represents work in progress.
