ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship – Scottish Graduate School of Social Science

ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship – Scottish Graduate School of Social Science

ESRC has just launched a new Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme linked to their Doctoral Training Partnerships. The scheme is aimed at those in the initial postdoctoral stage of their career, to provide the opportunity to consolidate their PhD through developing publications, their networks, and their research and professional skills.

Please note that the deadline applications has now passed and no additional applications will be considered for the 2019 round.

For more information on the scheme, please see the following link:

The Scottish Graduate School for Social Science has six Fellowships for allocation to their partner institutions. There is a two stage application process: Applicants for Stage 1 will be assessed by a panel within the University, with selected candidates going forward to Stage 2.

There is an internal SSPS process, the deadline for completed Stage 1 applications and short mentor statement is 10 am, 7 January 2019. Feedback will be given within 2-3 days, so please note there will be no extensions to this deadline. The School process is detailed below.

Eligibility: The call is open to applicants who have completed their PhD at a research organisation that is part of a DTP or CDT and who are within 12 months of completing their PhD. At the submission deadline, the applicant must either have been awarded a PhD or have submitted their thesis and passed their viva voce with minor corrections, with the expectation that the PhD will be awarded by the fellowship start date.

SSPS Process

1. All Fellows intending to apply through SSPS must have a core-staff mentor based within the School. The mentor should have experience and a strong interest in the applicant’s field of research but should not normally be the applicant’s PhD supervisor. Prospective applicants must first contact and have an agreed mentor in place. It is advised to start this process as soon as possible, as many staff will be away over the holiday period and will not be responding to emails.

2. Please let the SSPS Research Office know you are intending to apply, confirming your mentor to ssps.research@ed.ac.uk, ideally as soon as the mentor has agreed.

3. Please read through all eligibility and scheme guidance on the SGSSS website, and download the Stage 1 application.

By 10 am, 7 January 2019, please send to ssps.research@ed.ac.uk:

  • A completed Stage 1 application
  • A short statement (bullet points are fine) from the mentor in email form to ssps.research@ed.ac.uk (please let your mentor know as soon as possible that this is a requirement for the internal deadline – a completed one-page mentor statement will be required for the formal Stage 1 application submission on the 15th)

4. Feedback will be given in time to prepare for the 15 January Stage 1 application/mentor statement deadline, which requires registration on the SGSSS online grant management system, Gradhub.

5. Candidates will be made aware of the Stage 1 outcome by late February 2019, with a Stage 2 application due 22 March 2019. Further support will be given by the SSPS Research Office for the second stage application with an anticipated internal deadline of early/mid-March for completed applications.
