I am an experienced science policy researcher and evaluator of knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary research activities. I have acted as a consultant to a number of public bodies including the ESRC, Scottish Funding Council, Office of Science and Innovation, Scottish Executive, European Commission, and the League of European Research Universities. I am a member of the steering group of the Edinburgh Beltane for Public Engagement and past chair of the Scottish Funding Council’s Knowledge into Public Policy Action Group.
In addition to my research activities, outlined below, I am Associate Dean (Research Careers) for the College of Humanities and Social Science.
I have an Honours degree in Chemistry from the University of Aberdeen and an MSc in Science and Technology Policy from SPRU, University of Sussex. I completed a PhD on the impact of Scottish devolution on the policy-making process for science and innovation while working at the University of Edinburgh. Before joining the university, I worked for the UK civil service and held posts with the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

My research seeks to advance an understanding of problems of science and technology policy formation and strategic decision-making by adopting interdisciplinary and practitioner-based perspectives; my research and professional interests span:
• policy issues related to the governance of science, technology, innovation and knowledge systems• knowledge transfer/knowledge exchange• the promotion and management of interdisciplinary research• research evaluation and the assessment of research impact• higher education funding policy • Foresight
I recently edited a book entitled The Limits to Governance: The Challenges of Policy-making for the New Life Sciences which offers a critique of the new governance agenda for science and technology in the context of the life sciences. It draws on results from a number of Innogen research projects to date and presents a mix of empirical, theoretical and case study approaches, bringing a range of perspectives to bear on the governance of the life sciences including the relationship between innovation and regulation; the impact of governance of the life sciences on developing countries; and the contested role of stakeholders in participative governance.
Our latest book, in collaboration with Ann Bruce, Joyce Tait and Laura Meagher, is entitled Interdisciplinary Research Journeys: Practical Strategies for Capturing Creativity, and will be published by Bloomsbury Academic in Spring 2011.
This has developed from an ESRC Researcher Development Initiative project that I led, the ISSTI Interdisciplinary Masterclasses, which sought to improve the practice of interdisciplinary research between the social and natural sciences. The Masterclasses aim to formalise and codify researchers’ approach to the promotion, management and evaluation of interdisciplinary research and to share this knowledge with the wider ESRC research community. Outputs include a series of short guides to interdisciplinarity available to download below.
