Allyson Pollock

Prof Allyson Pollock is professor of international public health policy  at the University of Edinburgh. From 1998 to 2006 she was Professor of Public Health & Health Service Research at UCL and Director of Research & Development at UCL Hospitals NHS Trust.  She trained in medicine and is a consultant in public health.

Prof Pollock is a leading authority on public private partnerships, the privatisation of public services, and the effect of marketisation on public health and the public good

She has an international profile in public health and had made numerous interventions in the policy debate. She has given evidence to the Health, Transport, and Treasury Select Committees of the House of Commons UK, and to the Finance Committee of the Scottish Parliament, as well as to governments and public bodies around the world. She has written on the impact of the WTO and GATS on health and other public services, and is the co-author of The New NHS: a guide (Routledge) and author of NHS plc (Verso).

Her research interests include

  • the funding, organisation, and delivery of health care
  • evaluations of public private partnerships in public services and the impact on public health
  • innovative finance methods
  • globalisation, including the impact of the WTO and GATS on health and other public services
  • access to medicines in developing countries
  • research governance and clinical trials
