I am an interdisciplinary energy researcher, applying a range of techniques as appropriate to understand aspects of the energy challenges of contemporary society. Most recently, my ethnographic PhD investigation explored how, through their work, heating engineers can shape the central heating technologies installed in homes and how they come to be used. In analysing the data I applied ideas from sociology, namely: communities of practice and social capital, and from science and technology studies, in particular considering: actor-network theory and practice theory. I am currently exploring ways to take this research agenda forward through the application of qualitative approaches to better understand the role of construction professionals and intermediary actors in achieving reductions in the energy consumed through buildings. In relation to this work, I am a member of Construction Edinburgh, which facilitates collaboration between academics and organisations to tackle the intellectual and practical challenges posed by industry and government.
Prior to this, I completed a masters in Energy Demand Studies at UCL, and an undergraduate degree in Chemistry which included a year working as an Analytical Chemist at AstraZeneca.
I am also a co-coordinator of the STIS Seminar Series, and a member and coordinator of the School's Energy and Society Research Group which brings together energy research in sociology, science, technology and innovation studies (STIS), social anthropology and political science.
