Research Interests

Social Demography, especially 'population ageing' and its correlates; the family and the labour market; Work-life balance; Sociology of Gender especially masculinity and women and labour market chane; Sociology of national identity, especially stateless nationalism, comparisons between Scotland and Catalonia, and the role of the mass media. I also act as a consultant to a project evaluating aid and development projects in Malawi.

I am keen to promote the use of quantitative methods and evidence in social science. From 2009 to 2014 I was Strategic Advisor to the ESRC on QM Training. I sit on the advisory board of 'getstats' the Royal Statistical Society's Statistical Literacy Campaign. In 2012 I created a new Statistical Literacy course for students from all colleges and years at the University of Edinburgh.

I am happy to advise prospective PhD students wishing to study in the above or related areas.

Topics interested in supervising

I welcome enquiries about supervision of research on any aspect of social demography and gender change in contemporary societies, and more generally any topic that uses quantitative methods, espeically the secondary analysis of existing data, to study contemporary social change. I am currently supervising projects on the social participation of older people; gender in karate; the history of the use of statistics in UK sociology and social mobility and education in Scotland.
