School of Social and Political Science: Undergraduate study

Sociology is the study of how society works. It examines how individual choices are affected by wider social forces and how they can be understood by placing them in their own social context.

It provides description and analysis of the patterns and structures in human relationships, and encourages us to see the world through the eyes of other people.

Sociologists study people in society, looking at small groups such as families, larger organisations such as workplaces, very large institutions such as the education system, as well as whole societies such as Scotland.

Join a vibrant community

Our vibrant and diverse team covers a huge range of sociological interests. We're passionate about teaching and we value our students.

Develop practical skills

By training and supporting our students to carry out their own research, we place a strong emphasis on practical sociology rather than theory alone.

Benefit from research-led teaching

We encourage research-led teaching by ensuring that our lecturers are active researchers who bring the most contemporary ideas and knowledge from the field.
