Workshop Speakers 2017-2018

Ken Banks

Ken Banks, Founder of kiwanja.net and creator of messaging platform FrontlineSMS, devotes himself to the application of mobile technology for positive social and environmental change in the developing world. He has worked at the intersection of technology, anthropology, conservation and development for the past twenty-five years and, during that time, has lived and worked across the African continent.

He is a PopTech Fellow, a Tech Awards Laureate, an Ashoka Fellow and a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, and has been internationally recognised for his technology-based work. In 2013 he was nominated for the TED Prize, and in 2015 was a Visiting Fellow at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. In late 2015 Ken was appointed CARE International’s first Entrepreneur in Residence. In recognition of his pioneering work in mobile, in June 2017 Ken was presented with the Eugene L. Lawler Award for Humanitarian Contributions within Computer Science by the Association for Computing Machinery in the USA.


Iain Davidson

Iain is a freelance training and educational consultant and works alongside the university's Institute for Academic Development to help students develop their communication skills throughout their studies and beyond into their careers. He is a qualified teacher, fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has worked with organisations such as GlaxoSmithKline plc, The National Health Service (Scotland), the Forestry Commission (Scotland), the University of Cambridge, University College London, Queen's University Belfast, the British Council in Madrid and the Czech Management Centre in Prague. Excellent presentation and team working skills were essential in working in all of these organisations and Iain is passionate about helping others reach their potential in both of these core career skills. He looks forward to meeting and working with you!

Rhian Davies
Rhian Davies is the Head of the Project Management Office in Information Services and is a professionally certified project manager with extensive experience of project management in both the private and public sectors.  Rhian enjoys working with staff and students in the University to develop their project management skills and is a regular presenter at international conferences.

Clare De Mowbray, University of Edinburgh

Clare is a Research Projects Officer, who takes a leading role in the School of Social and Political Science on web communications and strategy; including digital marketing, social media activities, database management and event organisation.

Ken Dalgleish

Ken Dalgleish is a Headhunter with 25 years experience recruiting Board and Director level talent across Scotland and the UK. His clients include large private and public sector organisations and has particular skills in advising SME’s and Charities on organisational change. He is a former Director and joint founder of Munro Consulting and Munro Solutions. He is a Chartered Accountant and worked previously as Finance Director in the specialist manufacturing / engineering and FMCG sectors.


Professor Susan Deacon CBE

With over 30 years experience in both the study and practice of leadership and change, Susan Deacon offers a range of insights into effective leadership in a fast moving, complex and interconnected world. A former Member of the Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government Minister, she has worked at a senior level across the private, public and third sectors and at the interface between academia, business and policymaking. Susan has served on the Boards of a number of companies and charities and is a regular contributor to policy and leadership forums across the UK and internationally. She is currently Assistant Principal External Relations and a Professorial Fellow of the University of Edinburgh; Chair of the Institute of Directors in Scotland; Chair of the Edinburgh Festivals Forum and a Non-Executive Director of Lothian Buses. Her early career was in organisational development and change management in the private and public sectors and in higher education. She was awarded a CBE for services to business, education and public service in 2017 and has recently been appointed as the next Chair of the Scottish Police Authority, the body with oversight of policing in Scotland.
 

Allan Gaw, MD, PhD, FRCPath, FFPM

A highly experienced medical researcher and educator, Allan has been working in academia for over 30 years. During his career he has held several senior directorates including Director of  the Glasgow Clinical Research Facility,  the Wellcome Trust CRF in Northern Ireland and currently as Associate Director for Education Quality Standards at the NIHR-CRN at Leeds University. This is in tandem with his work as a freelance medical educator, writer and research consultant.

Stephanie (Charlie) Farley is the Open Educational Resources (OER) Advisor for Educational Design and Engagement. She provides the OER service and the Open.Ed website.

Johanna Holton
Johanna has spent over 15 years designing and building programmes and businesses for social good across a variety of sectors including higher education, active transport, sport & culture, international development and social enterprise. In addition to being one of the co-founders of award-winning CycleHack, Johanna has created and curated four TEDx events, two creative and cultural festivals, and the global phenomenon Penny in Yo’ Pants. Johanna also served as a Peace Corps volunteer and USAID programme consultant in Georgia, working with a network of local women’s health organisations. Johanna currently manages the $27 million, 7 year, MasterCard Foundation Scholars Programme at the University of Edinburgh which provides full scholarships and leadership programming to African students with high potential but few educational opportunities.
 

Mark McAteer, Director of Strategic Planning, Performance and Communications, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service 

Mark gained his Doctorate from The University of Strathclyde, Glasgow in 1993.  Following a number of research posts he returned to teach at Strathclyde in 1995 in the Scottish Local Authorities Management Centre within the Strathclyde Business School.  This involved leading the delivery of the UK’s first Local Authority Management Development Programme teaching on the University’s International Management Programme contributing to the MBA Programme. In 2005 Mark moved on from the University sector to help found the Improvement Service (IS), a public service dedicated to supporting development, change and reform in Local Government and Community Planning. Mark was the Director of Governance & Performance Management and Deputy Chief Executive of the IS and led Programmes of work including Strategic Change; Performance Management and benchmarking; Improving Outcomes and Elected Member Development. In 2016 Mark was appointed Director of Strategic Planning, Performance and Communications at the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.  As a member of the Strategic Leadership Team, he has a key role in supporting the service in responding to public service reform in Scotland and to deliver business change and improvement within the Service.

Lorraine Porteous

Lorraine has over twenty five years’ experience as a program leader working internationally and in the UK covering and leading on strategic reform, policy design & implementation, international development and stabilization across military, civil and diplomatic sectors. She is a confident and diplomatic communicator specializing in post-conflict and fragile states with extensive experience of working with international NGO’s/IGO’s and Governments within Eastern Europe, Balkans, Central Asia, Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan & South Pacific, undertaking strategic and operational reviews, engaging key stakeholders and Ministers, delivering complex pioneering improvement plans, and, negotiating and influencing in highly political and culturally sensitive environments.

Lorraine is an MBA Graduate from the University of Edinburgh and has an M.Litt. Middle East & Central Asia Security Studies from St Andrews University. She is also a graduated registered nurse, midwife and health visitor. Her extensive career ranges from academia in Scotland & Internationally to senior management positions on USAID, EU & WB projects. 
 

Katie Scott
Katie Scott is an independent educational consultant specialising in delivering training, workshops and programmes developing students leadership approaches, confidence and abilities. In addition to this Katie is Head of Peer Learning and Support at Edinburgh University Students Association. She is Co-Chair of the International Academic Peer Learning Leadership supporting over 450 members from 22 countries to develop a thriving global community of peer-led learning practice. Katie is also Co-Director of the Empower Project a feminist charity based in Scotland, working hard to support communities to end violence against women. 

Dr. David Steinberg

Dr. David Steinberg is a leading authority on the art and science of asking questions. He conducts career and research skills masterclasses at several UK universities including Heriot-Watt University School of Social Sciences, Strathclyde Business School, Edinburgh University School of Social and Political Science, Edinburgh University Institute for Academic Development, and Nottingham Business School.

David holds a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, an M.A. in Communications Policy from City, University of London, and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

David emigrated to the UK with his family in the summer of 2016. He lives in North Berwick, Scotland.


Jennifer Steven
Jennifer is the Careers Consultant for the School of Social and Political Science and the School of Health in Social Science. Prior to joining the University of Edinburgh Careers Service Jennifer has worked in diverse Russell Group institutions advising a range of students and has also worked on a series of international projects including European Internships Fairs and events in Brussels and delivering careers events in China and Hong Kong. She is a music graduate with a PG Dip in Careers Guidance and Vocational Development. Jennifer works Monday to Friday and is based in the Main Library Building.

Eugen Stoica is a Scholarly Communications Officer for the Library and provides support for Copyright, REF compliance and e-theses.
