African Studies, Eurocentrism & the Africa That Was
There seem to be some understanding that certain Eurocentric scholarship and theorizing on Africa have mischaracterized the continent in different areas and various ways. Campbell Momoh calls this mischaracterization unfortunate and takes it to be indicative of some lack of effort by Eurocentric scholars. Cheikh Ante Diop and Ifi Amadiume describe the mischaracterization as Eurocentric scholarship failing African studies. In this talk, I show how these mischaracterization and failures are manifested in a couple of areas. I conclude by highlighting some ways, particularly in terms of consequences, why the mischaracterization and failures, which exhibit various stereotypical attitudes about Africa, should not be considered innocuous.
