A former alumni of the University of Edinburgh, Joyce was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University in 2018 in recognition of her significant contribution to social work education and scholarship in Scotland, and internationally.
Joyce was the first female Professor at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, where she held the Chair in Social Work.
