Background

My research is attempting to develop better ways of understanding the use of Active Labour Market Policies (ALMP) in reintegrating sick and disabled claimants of working-age non-employment benefits to the workplace. It contends that approaches hitherto don't tell us the full picture: employment support promised to such claimants does not always materialise, and political commitments to providing more and better employment support is often fleeting. Applied cross-nationally to two welfare states considered to be very different from one another, the framework shows that the same challenges face policymakers and many of the same factors are in play, despite the differences in welfare ideologies, institutions and policy approaches.
