We offer a wide range of academic and professional skills workshops designed to boost your skills for employability. These interactive sessions, led by experienced tutors and guest speakers, are tailored for different levels, allowing participants to select the level of expertise most appropriate to their interests and needs.

Sessions are open to all SSPS staff and students.

Online Professional Development

Online professional development opportunities are great for students studying away, distance learners or those just struggling to attend sessions in person. With the ability to be wrapped around your own personal schedule and interests you can tailor your development needs.

University of Edinburgh Digital Skills Framework

The University of Edinburgh Digital Skills Framework provides access to over 500 digital resources and training courses to develop your digital skills, offering a variety of learning methods gathered from over 30 providers. It includes :

A self-assessment questionnaire to evaluate your current digital skill levels Role profiles to help you think about the digital skills you need for your role A resource finder to help you find ways to develop your skills.

Along with the Careers Service, the Learning and teaching team have designed 10 playlists to facilitate your learning of key skills important to your career through LinkedIn Learning.

On LinkedIn Learning you can learn anywhere you have internet access at any time around your own schedule. Each playlist can be paused and restarted at any time of your choosing. Perfect for students with many demands on their time, distance learners or those away from the University. Once you have completed the training you can download a certificate of completion.

The resources are either provided by the University or, are open and freely available. You can also filter resources according to your role, the type of skills you want to develop, and level of difficulty.

23 Things - Digital Skills

The University of Edinburgh’s 23 Things for Digital Knowledge is an award-winning (LILAC Credo Digital Literacy Award 2017), a self-directed course, run by Information Services Group. There is flexibility to do the parts you are interested in, do them all or only some 'Thing's.

Students completing 23Things for skills training are supported and moderated by Charlie Farley and will include Google Hangouts, Webinars and Group Work if students want to engage with the group as well as online activity.

Institute for Academic Development

The Institute for Academic Development provides University level support for teaching, learning and researcher development; through leadership, innovation, collaboration and direct provision that benefits students, staff and the University’s international reputation.

This remit includes a mixture of direct support for students and staff (e.g. workshops, online resources, networks and advice), much of it delivered in partnership with Schools and other Services, alongside support for curriculum innovation and enhancement.

The Institute for Academic Development runs workshops throughout the year.

Careers Service

The Careers Service runs many different initiatives to support your career planning and development. All events are listed on My Career Hub.

Counselling Service

The Counselling Service offers workshops on a variety of topics. These are held in the Main Library and are open to all students.

Wellbeing Presentations, delivered to groups of up to 20 students, offer short introductions to different topics. Each session lasts for one hour and includes small group discussions and individual exercises for reflection and practice. Further resources are available at the end of the session if you would like them.
