Students registered for a joint honours degree in a Modern European language & Politics are assessed on the basis of year abroad marks translated into Edinburgh marks. The year abroad will count in classifying your degree. Politics courses should form one-third of your assessment overseas. For a student studying at an Erasmus partner in Europe, that means 20 ECTS (which translates to 40 Edinburgh credits).
If you are a MEL & Politics joint honours student and will NOT be studying courses for credit (typically doing an internship or some other work experience), your Politics assessment will be on the basis of two assessed essays, each of 4000 words. Your work will be supervised by a member of PIR remotely.
Essays should be in English, and will be assessed on the same basis as essays submitted in Edinburgh. Both essays should relate to the domestic or international politics of the country in which the exchange is taking place. The second essay may relate more narrowly to the placement topic (e.g. a case study of the work of an NGO). The essays should also demonstrate a link to the wider academic literature, including the literature studied in Politics courses in years 1 and 2. They should use a wide variety of sources and you are encouraged to use sources in the language of the country you are visiting as well as English sources. Bibliographic references to these sources should be listed in the original language.
For more information on writing your JYA assessed essay and what to expect from your supervisor, see the JYA Assessed Essay Handbook. Any other queries please contact the Politics & IR International Exchange Coordinator, Dr Kasia Kaczmarska (PIR-Int-Exchange@ed.ac.uk).
You will be assigned a supervisor by the PIR Department. Deadlines are given below for submitting your topic; it is your responsibility to make sure you meet these.
Essays should be submitted via ELMA (guidance available on the course Learn page). Standard Politics & IR department penalties apply for work submitted late.
