Tutoring Opportunities

Body

The Semester Two SPS Tutor Call has now closed. We will begin advertising for next year's vacancies in May 2024. If you have any questions in the meantime, please reach out to sps.tutoring@ed.ac.uk

Key points to note before you apply:

Once we have received your completed application (Application, CV & Cover Letter, Eligibility to Work Check and Appointee Information Form), your application will be assigned to one of 3 categories:

Category 1- Current UoE PhD student with an existing SPS tutoring contract

Category 2- Current UoE PhD student without an existing SPS tutoring contract

Category 3- External Applicant (Not a current PhD student)

Applicants in Category 1 are given priority. Applicants in Category 2 will be allocated next. Applicants in Category 3 will then be considered.

All applications are reviewed by the subject area owning the vacancy. Nominations are sent to SPS Tutoring from the course organisers within each subject area. SPS Tutoring will carry out final checks before sending on any offers.

Other important details:

  1. The maximum number of weekly hours any tutor who is currently studying full-time for a PhD should undertake is 10 hours. In some subject areas, the preferred load may be lower. Further restrictions may apply if you are a student visa holder. Please be mindful of these restrictions when applying to tutor (especially if you already have an existing tutor contract).
  2. Tutors must be based in Edinburgh, or able to commute to Edinburgh, as teaching is delivered in-person and on-campus (with the exception of distance learning courses). If you are based outside of the UK, you cannot take on any work or be considered for tutoring.
  3. Marking may be required once teaching has concluded. As agreed within your application to tutor, tutors are expected to be available for the duration of the course and for marking (when required).
  4. Tutoring posts are student development opportunities; priority will be given to current SPS PhD students.
  5. PhD students currently in Year 1 must have completed at least one semester of their studies before applying to tutor.
  6. If you do not currently have a contract to tutor with the School of Social and Political Science, you must prove your right to work in the UK. This involves sending us your right to work documents and attending an in-person right to work drop-in session to finalise your right to work check. Please see the how to apply section for full details. If we do not have the required documents and in-person check completed, we will not be able to send you a formal offer of work.
  7. For the general job descriptors and details on pay, please see the documents 'Key Employment Facts for Tutors in the School of Social and Political Science', 'Conditions of Service' and the  'Tutor Activities and Paid Hours Job Descriptions' in the Guidance for Tutors section.
