The International Development Cluster at SPS

Introduction

The International Development Cluster at the School of Social and Political Science (SPS) is a network of scholars across the school who are involved in international development research.

Our work addresses some of the most pressing challenges in international development today, combining a global perspective with an emphasis on the places and people that shape current trends in development and humanitarianism from the bottom up.

What is international development?

International development is a field of practice and research that is broadly concerned with positive change and reducing inequalities in the societies and economies of the world.

Although rooted in problematic ideas about human 'progress' that are tied up with a history of colonialism, today the field covers a large variety of critical approaches to understanding the diversity and complexity of the world’s societies, economies, and cultures. These include efforts to address human suffering and enable people to realise their full potential.
