Description

A three-day interdisciplinary workshop exploring plural medicine, traditional healing, and climate-altered care systems in Highland Asia.

  • This international workshop brings together scholars working across the Himalayas and beyond to explore how diverse medical systems—traditional, spiritual, biomedical, and ecological—interact and respond to changing social and environmental conditions.
  • Hosted at the University of Edinburgh by the Centre for South Asian Studies and the Edinburgh Centre for Medical Anthropology, and supported by the British Academy, the event features hybrid panels, in-person discussions, and a special focus on climate-altered care and more-than-human healing.
  • Presentations include case studies from Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Highland Asia more broadly, and span themes such as Indigenous healing, antimicrobial resistance, ritual soundscapes, gendered care, and therapeutic uncertainty.

Join us for a rich exchange of ideas at the intersection of medical anthropology, global health, and Indigenous knowledge systems.

Venue: Chrystal Macmillan Building, 15a George Square, Edinburgh EH8 9LD (6th Floor, Violet Laidlaw Room)
