Description

While a range of media forms, including posters, television, and audio and video cassettes, have long been an integral part of the far-right Hindu nationalist movement in India and its uptake among the wider public, I will focus on Hindu nationalism’s use of the frame - in cinema and social media - to understand how a wide range of actors, state and non-state, insert themselves into an authoritarian aesthetic regime. Rather than work with static models of production/reception, online/offline, state/people, consumers/producers, my presentation focuses on the making and circulation of frames that allow the dynamic co-construction of authoritarianism.
