Description

Organised by the Centre for Security Research and CRITIQUE.

This talk follows the trouble of how plans for “green data centers” arrived in Scotland as the nation came to be identified as part of an AI Growth Zone in the United Kingdom’s official strategy to promote AI growth. I consider the fantasy and promise of the “green data center” as a kind of media object that seeks to futureproof the economy. Tracking what kind of future the green data center pursues, this talk locates its promise of economic security with questions of land use, water consumption, electricity generation, climate, and public health. Doing so, it shows how the data center manages anxieties about environment and economy by maintaining their distinction.
