Abstract
The Situating International and Global Mathematics (SIGMA) project examines the global transformation of modern mathematical research since the late nineteenth century. We will outline the project's aims and motivations and some of the major directions of research to date. The project will be presented in programmatic terms, with reference to the Strong Programme in the Sociology of Scientific Knowledge developed in Edinburgh some years ago. In our research on globalisation, we have developed a number of principles analogous to those that animated the original strong programme, supporting a broader intervention that we hope can be just as transformational for how historians attempt to explain the contexts and practices of mathematics.
