Set against the backdrop of Bahia, Brazil, Van de Port considers the profound experience of getting lost—whether adrift in the wilderness, consumed by madness, or submerged in the intensity of lovemaking. He concludes that surrendering oneself in this way is the territory of the unconventional: the misfits, heretics, and perverts. These are souls, including his own, seeking a world far larger than the one they know.
