Every School of Social and Political Science subject area came in the top 12 of the Complete University Guide UK 2021 rankings, with Social Work coming top in the UK for the third year running.

The University of Edinburgh overall was named 15th best in the UK in the overall rankings, climbing one place on last year.
Subject area results
The School’s results in the Complete University Guide’s subject rankings were:
- Anthropology – 9th (+2 places from last year)
- Middle Eastern and African Studies – 4th (=)
- Politics – 11th (+1)
- Sociology – 6th (=)
- Social Work – 1st (=)
- Social Policy – 11th (-5)

The subject area titles used by the Complete University Guide do not all exactly match the titles of SPS’ subject areas. Some encompass programmes offered by other schools at the University. The School’s Sustainable Development subject area isn’t included in the Complete University Guide.
