Overview

Description

The Centre of African Studies is part of an international consortium that received more than €4.4million from the European Commission for the European Doctorate (joint PhD programme) Health and Environment in Africa and Europe (HEALENAE) Doctoral Network.

The programme will train 15 PhD students at the partner organisations:

  • Arhus University in Denmark (the lead applicant)
  • University of Oslo in Norway
  • KU Leuven in Belgium
  • University of Edinburgh
  • Makerere University in Uganda
  • University of Nairobi in Kenya
  • University of Cape Town in South Africa.

The HEALENAE Doctoral Network offers a cross-continental, innovative, interdisciplinary, and multi-sectoral anthropological approach to pressing interrelated health and environmental challenges across contemporary Africa and Europe.

Concerns about the interlinkages between environment and health, and the intercontinental connectedness between these problems in Africa and Europe, have been growing rapidly since the last pandemic. This double interrelatedness between environmental and health changes in and across Africa and Europe plays out in various ways that need further exploration, understanding and action. These equire new kinds of social scientists, versed in environmental and health issues, and able to think and work across disciplines and continents.

This is funded by the European Union.
