Content

On 27 October, during Black History Month, our Social Work team is hosting the event Respect and Recognition - Contributions of minoritised social workers.

We've collected some of the information shared at the event so you can get involved in the conversations it's raising. You can find all this below.

The event

Here's more details of what the event is all about:

  • Social work in Scotland makes a real and positive difference to the lives of many thousands of people every day. Social work services are delivered by a large and diverse workforce delivering services based in local authorities, and the third and independent sectors. Over recent decades the proportion of social workers from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic backgrounds has increased in Scotland.

This panel discussion explores the contribution that these practitioners make, and also the challenges they experience in going about their work. The invited panel of speakers represent individuals who have experience of working in different sectors and from across Scotland. The seminar is a celebration of this important contribution, while also engaging with the need to ensure that employers, academic institutions and professional bodies engage with the racism experienced by social workers from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic backgrounds.

This event is jointly organised by the University of Edinburgh Social Work Department and the Scottish Association of Social Workers.
