Research interests
Although not a central component of my role, I have a strong interest in research and was Co-Investigator on the project: Hampton, C., Loucks, N. and Armstrong, K. (2025). The Lang Whang (The Long Journey): the hidden impact of Scotland's longest prison sentences. Prison Reform Trust. Available at: The Lang Wang (The Long Journey)
Background
I am Lecturer and Director of Practice Learning for BSc (Hons) and MSW programmes. I also lead on the involvement of social work service users and carers in curriculum development and delivery.
Prior to taking up post at University of Edinburgh I worked at Edinburgh Napier University as a Tutor and Placement Coordinator. As well as contributing to the MSW programme, I was a tutor on the Graduate Certificate in Practice Learning programme. I have also worked with the Open University as an Associate Lecturer (Practice Tutor).
I am a registered social worker with experience in statutory and the third sector. After gaining my social work qualification in 1994, I joined a Children and Families team. I developed an interest in child protect work and undertook a Certificate in Child Protection studies at the University of Dundee. Following a move to a rural part of Scotland I worked with a Community Care team where my work focused on adults and children with disabilities. Following a break in employment to complete a Master of Arts in Canada, I returned to Scotland and worked in a Fostering and Adoption team.
A move to a third sector agency provided an opportunity to pursue my interest in social work education. After completing a Practice Development Award in Practice Learning, I set up and managed the agency’s national student programme, undertaking practice educator responsibilities.
I have a strong interest in promoting the involvement of people with lived experience in social work education.
